Necessary data for fitness for service evaluation of a structure presenting a defect

Marc BOUSSEAU, DCNS PROPULSION – CESMAN- La Montagne (France)

Methods for assessment of fitness for service have been developed over the past decade. The goal is to ensure that the defect will not present any risks during service, for a sufficiently long period given the conditions under which used. The methods used are comparable, based on an approach using two parameters: and and Failure Assessment Diagrams (FAD). These calculations require input data which should as far as possible be those for the material in the area where the defect is located. The present document reports on the approach used in order to acquire the data. Formulae given in standards, procedures or recommendations are presented and the results they give compared with experimental values.
