140 liquid natural gas carriers are today in service, 74 of which in Moss system (spherical tanks), 60 of which in Gaztransport et Technigaz membrane system (insulation system supported by the inner hull) and 6 of which in other systems. 53 are on order (18 Moss and 35 membrane). A potential market of about 36 new orders is yet identified. One can expect an unprecedented number of deliveries between 2003 and 2006 to satisfy a more and more increasing demand.

This paper deals with membrane type LNGC only. The experience feedback for these ships is already very significant, both by the number of in service ships and cumulated years at sea. Lessons learned :trom this experience and concomitant evolution of design tools for LNG storage tanks are emphasized with some typical cases.
