The evolution of traditional maritime observation capabilities opens up opportunities to imagine new and innovative approaches to maritime observation and surveillance. The ocean covers 70% of our planet's surface, and collecting data is essential to ensuring maritime safety, optimizing logistics, monitoring emissions, and understanding climate change. However, these capabilities are undermined by budgetary, technical, and human constraints, limiting the capacity for action of stakeholders in the sector.

In this context, the Internet of Things (IoT) offers a powerful alternative. By deploying smart sensors on ships and port infrastructure, the IoT makes it possible to develop new, accurate sensors and collect real-time weather data such as atmospheric pressure, wind speed and direction, water temperature, as well as positioning information and data on pollutants (CO₂, NO₂, and SO₂).

It is in this context that OCEANOVOX, certified as an EMODNET partner in 2024, launched "THE OCEANO VOX INITIATIVE: you sail, we care," a project recently recognized as an official program of the Ocean Decade by UNESCO, which aims to unite the maritime community around collaborative and sustainable ocean observation to enhance maritime safety, optimize routes, anticipate risks, accelerate decarbonization, and monitor the evolution of our oceans.
