Modelling deformation and parametrisation of the deformations of ship hulls and associated hydrodynamic meshing with the PIAF software

L. BROSSET, Institut de Recherches de la Construction Navale (IRCN), Nantes

The PIAF+ software [Ref.13] is a three-dimensional surface modeller which is especially suitable for solving the specific problems of shipbuilding. It is based both on the NURBS [Rcf.4,5,6,9] and Bezier [Ref.2, 7] techniques and proposes original methods enabling :

-the construction of polynomial models of complex surfaces such as ship hulls either by an ex nihilo creation or by copying punctual data describing a shape already faired. The aft part or the fore part of a conventional hull can thus accurately be described by a single NURBS surface ;

-the deformation locally of globally of such a surface in a simple and intuitive way without having

recourse to a tedious manipulation of the summits of the specific polyhedron ;

-the parametrization of the de formations of a hull so as to be able to optimise it by numerical

computations ;

-the construction of (20 or 30) hydrodynamic or hydroelastic meshings directly from the CAD model of a hull in order to permit numerical computations of seakeeping, wave resistance, modes and eigen frequencies of the "wetted" structure, or to simulate flows around the hull through the solution of Navier-Stokes equations.

After a theoretical presentation of the solutions proposed by the software in order to solve each of these problems, this paper gives some practical examples of their results.
