Feedback on the propulsion dual fuel diesel electric of LNG

JF CASTEL, GAZOCEAN
J. LERICHE, GDF SUEZ DRI CRIGEN

While the use of LNG as fuel is considered more and more to meet environmental constraints, GDF SUEZ and GAZOCEAN operating for six years the first three LNG in the world fitted with "Dual Fuel Diesel Electric" propulsion system - Provalys and GDF SUEZ Global Energy- wish to share their feedback this type of propulsion

The first part describes the DFDE propulsion systems and the fuel gas supply chain, and then this paper summarizes the feedback operators for the delivery of ships with a particular focus on the impact of fuel quality on gas propulsion efficiency.

The properties of LNG and fuel gas are described in detail with particular aspects of ageing of the product which may induce in Roll Over phenomena as well as means to control the boil-off management.

The impact of different compositions on the LNG on the propulsion efficiency is illustrated by the events recorded during the operation of ships.

To better understand these phenomena, an analysis unit and LNG Fuel Gas has been installed on one of the LNG carrier of the fleet and the first results of this analysis will be presented.

In conclusion, the importance of maintenance is also described as well as the optimization means of propulsion proposed
