A semi-stochastic approach to the problem of the longitudinal strength of ships

The theoretical foundations of the reliability criteria applied to the dimensioning of ship structures are briefly discussed with reference to the semi-stochastic criteria. An original formulation is introduced through its underlying principles regarding mean ultimate compressive strength values. It is shown how this formulation makes it possible, ~n ~he field of both semi-stochastic criteria, to solve design and verification problems (with reference only to the Longitudinal strength) in a simple way. This formulation is applied to a tanker and a rapid computation procedure performed to determine the ultimate bending moment.
