Theoretical-experimental study of the buckling of thin wall cylinders loaded by external pressure

This paper concerns an investigation of the behaviour of thin-walled cylindrical shells under external pressure. These kinds of structures are the main components of submarine vessels. The results of an experimental investigation of a series of cylindrical specimens were compared with the numerical solution obtained by a non-linear finite-element computation on a mathematical model simulating the actual structure. The double aim was thus pursued of checking bath the numerical procedure and the testing methodology adopted.
