Comparison of cavitation erosion resistance of metals and alloys used for shipbuilding.

This paper presents a study of cavitation erosion resistance phenomenon of copper Cu/c2, Brass CuZn20, copper aluminium alloys CuA12 and CuA16 and URANUS 50 austeno-ferritic stainless steel (Z5 CNDU 21-08) .

By comparing mass loss curves, erosion rate curves, incubation period (Ti) and maximum erosion rate, it is possible to sort theses different metals and alloys about their cavitation erosion behaviour.

A good correlation is obtained between copper metal and alloys. Cu A16 has a good cavitation erosion resistance.

Classification by increasing cavitation erosion resistance is the following : Cu/c2 -Cu A12 -Cu Z.n20 -Cu A16 -Z5 CNDU 21-08.
