Three dimensional modelling for ship design

M. POMMELLET, Consultant SISTRE, Applications Techniques

The computerization of the design of complex surfaces has inspired, fore more than fifteen years, research on and development which can provide a continuous numerical expression for the most various forms in order to allow a complete numerical processing. These studies are now applied successfully to a growing number of industrial fields (space and craft industry automotive industry. etc, ,.).Considering how specific its needs are. the shipbuilding industry uses little or poorly the possibilities of computer aided three-dimensional design. The purpose of this paper is therefore :

- to briefly outline the main theoretical elements which apply specifically

- to three-dimensional design.

- to show how these methods can apply to ship design.

- to conclude by showing the efficiency of a three-dimensional ship design software with an example.
