High times of the shipbuilding in la Seyne-sur-Mer from the second empire to 1914

Jean-Pierre GUIOL, Ingénieur ENSAM

The history of shipbuilding in La Seyne-sur-Mer is an entrancing human and technical venture. The zenith of its renown is located between 1856 (Second Empire) and 1914 (First World War). Their fame was well known in the navies all over the world. After the bright success of the frigate “Gloire” and schooner “Napoleon”, their great shipbuilder Stanislas DUPUY de LÔME joined the “Forges et Chantiers de la Méditerranée” Company, as a leader, for 23 years (from 1862 till his death 1885). President Louis Napoleon BONAPARTE had so high an opinion of their knowledge that he founded the first limited company F.C.M. with the considerable capital of four millions gold francs, opening the access to the international markets. After that, Amable LAGANE took over this leadership during 38 years. The remembrance of this prestigious period must stay present to the rising generations
