Bassin d'essais des carenes conceived several pods by using numerical calculations. One of it shows the forces and momentum with regards to the flow orientation that varies from 0 to 35 degrees. Calculations show a big thrust variation of one blade during a complete revolution.

Comparisons between calculations and tests in a cavitation tunnel have been performed on a pod equipped with two contra-rotative propellers, and show a good correlation especially on the torque.

Bassin d'essais des carenes performed several tests on podded ships, showing this way

an interaction between pods and hull. The extrapolation method for self propulsion tests, especially developed at Bassin d'essais des carenes for this kind of ships, gives a very accurate prediction as proven by recent results at sea on a podded cruise liner.
