Economic pressure, fuel prize increase and political wish to reduce green house gas (GHG) lead to consider alternative mean of propulsion for commercial ships.

In this paper are presented and analyzed various auxiliary wind propulsion systems intended to be used onboard of commercial ships, taking into account operational constraints (size, safety, economy,...). All aspects of the problem are accounted for : aerodynamic performances, energetic efficiency, impact of weather conditions and economical view.

A case study, carried out for a tanker shows the potential of auxiliary wind propulsion for commercial ships.
