H. DEN HELD, Chantiers de l'Atlantique, Saint-Nazaire

To face at all stages of the ship design process, the important question of accurate predictions of performances, the naval architects must have at their disposed a set of various prediction tools.

For the conceptual design, when only general dimensions are available, the predictions are based on simple empirical formula. At the other end, final predictions come generally from model tests.

From simple to more precise methods, the necessary ship data are Increasing.

The present situation at CHANTIERS DE L'ATLANTIQUE can be considered as a good example, and is presented here with some details. In particular, the existing and planned data bases and computer modules are shown, together with the flexible structure where they are immersed.
