ROYAL CARIBBEAN CRUISE ordered on 30 July 1985 from ALSTHOM / CHANTIERS DE L'ATLANTIQUE, a passenger ship for delivery within 29 months and called "SOVEREIGN OF THE SEAS".

Her unusual dimensions and also her technical originality required the working out of calculations naturally to the scale of the Work so that the technological problems encountered when designing the structure could be overcome.

This memoir sets forth the main lines of the overall calculations worked out from now on for each passenger ship in order to :

.determine the distribution of the bending longitudinal stresses on various decks (superstructures included),

.calculate the relative deformations between the decks connected by glazed walls,

.evaluate the stresses induced in light alloy (stresses due to ship distortion and heat initiated forces).
